R101 airship – Spare altimeter

This large Short & Mason’s of London 0-10,000 feet airship altimeter was a spare held at Cardington for the ill-fated R101 airship that crashed on 5th of October 1930 at Allonne, just south of Beauvais, France.
It has been subsequently fitted to a hardwood surround fitted with an information plaque, allowing it to be displayed easily.
The rear of the instrument shows an unattributed hand scratched note confirming its provenance.
It was purchased many years ago from and auction at Cardington.
