Hawker Hind 1936 Dual Control Trainer project

Background: In 2013 a number of Hawker Hind aircraft were found, in a remarkable state of preservation, in a scrap yard near Kabul in Afghanistan. These were returned to the UK.

What is less known is that in 1970, four much more complete Hind aircraft were gifted by the Afghan state to several nations, including the RAF Museum, The Shuttleworth Collection and lastly, the National Aviation Museum of Ottawa, Canada – in that order of choice. The two in the UK were restored, with the Shuttleworth aircraft returned to flight. However, the Canadians had the last choice of poorer examples, and because of this, they were allowed to take two aircraft (in almost identical condition). One was restored and is on display, and the other was released to the restorer as payment. Eventually, this aircraft, L7181 (G-CBLK), was acquired by Aero Vintage.

We offer this aircraft for sale, but with an interesting option. One of the scrapyard Hinds from the later recovery was a dual-control 2-seater training aircraft, and with this knowledge and the parts, we could, if required, complete the aircraft in this configuration. We also found the remains of another Hind in the UK, beyond recovery to fly separately, but the cowlings are in good order and bear the identity of a British-based Hind trainer. In this guise, it would be an extremely good-looking aircraft (see photos) and available for SSAC Class 2 Commercial Flight Experiences (subject to CAA approval).

We are quite happy to sell it as a project ‘as is’ for the buyer to take on the restoration, and it comes with new spars, and plenty of good or rebuilt parts, including an engine, new propeller, new wheels and much more, or we can offer to complete the aircraft in fixed-priced stages.
